Safer gambling tools — how they work

UK-licensed operators must offer a range of player protection tools. Here is what each one does and how to switch it on — most take effect immediately or within 24 hours.

Deposit limits

Set a cap on how much you can add to your account over a day, week or month. Find this in account settings under “safer gambling” or “deposit limits”. Decreases apply straight away; increases usually have a cooling-off period of 24 hours or more.

Loss limits

Similar to deposit limits but tracks net losses instead. Once you hit the threshold, you cannot place further bets until the period resets. Useful if you tend to chase losses rather than overspend on deposits.

Reality checks / session timers

Pop-up reminders after a set interval — typically 30 or 60 minutes — showing how long you have been playing and your net position. They do not stop play automatically; they just give you a moment to decide whether to continue.

Cool-off (timeout)

Temporarily locks your account for 24 hours up to six weeks. You cannot log in or place bets during the period. Marketing emails should stop. Useful when you need a short break without a long-term commitment.

Self-exclusion (single operator)

Blocks access to one operator for a minimum period — usually six months to five years. During exclusion the operator must close your account, return remaining balance and stop all marketing. Reopening before the period ends requires contacting the operator directly.

GamStop (all UKGC operators)

Register free at gamstop.co.uk. Choose six months, one year or five years. Every participating UK-licensed site must block new registrations and close existing accounts. GamStop cannot be reversed early — the block runs its full course.

When to use which tool

  • Playing slightly more than planned? Start with a deposit limit and reality check.
  • Need a few days away? Use a cool-off period.
  • Gambling feels out of control? Self-exclude from individual sites or register with GamStop, and contact GamCare.
